Celebrating a life well lived

The Remembering Nat committee

The inspirational Natalie Stevens lost her 19 year battle with breast cancer in December 2015.

Nat’s friends and family are determined to honour Natalie and keep her memory alive while supporting cancer research at the Mater Foundation. They formed the Remembering Nat committee in early 2016 and have raised over $130,000!

These much needed funds have funded a nurse to run the Ascities trial with patients in Brisbane and in early 2018 Remembering Nat were able to purchase a Scalp Cooling Cap system for the Mater Cancer Care Centre. This machine is a non-invasive treatment that can help patients retain some or all of their hair and ultimately improve patients self confidence leading to a positive attitude to treatment.

Bubbles & Bliss event

Our Bubbles & Bliss event is held in the month of November in the week of Nat’s birthday. It is an occasion full of fun, laughter, reminiscing and bringing to life all the beautiful things that Natalie embodied. The generous crowd of 230 helped our inaugural event to raise an astounding $45,000!

Our inaugural event had over $35,000 in prizes, including 6 live auction items, a treasure chest prize valued over $1,500, 12 silent auction items and close to 30 raffle prizes each valued over $250. The generosity of the crowd saw the first live auction item go for close to $6,000.

Running for Nat

To get the fundraising under way a few members of the Remembering Nat committee participated in the 2016 Mater Chicks in Pink Fun Run. Meera Honan, Remembering Nat committee member raised over $10,000 to become the Top Fundraiser.

In 2017 there was hardly a dry eye to be found when our much larger Running for Nat team took to the stage to collect the Family and Friends title. Championed by Meera Honan (who was again Top Fundraiser), as well as Nat’s parents Max and Dee Stevens. We raised more than $11,000 for Mater Chicks in Pink.

The Mater Foundation

In her final stages Nat attended the Mater Hospital. True to form she developed a strong bond with her oncologist and care nurses, many of whom have attended our Bubbles & Bliss events.

Kellie and Sue were Nat’s care nurses who reflected on taking care of Nat:

Nursing Nat was a pleasure and such a hoot at times. Sue and I shared many laughs, and many tears, with Nat and for that we will be forever grateful. She touched us so much and we are better nurses for having nursed her.

The Mater Care Centre touched Nat’s heart so the Remembering Nat committee felt it fitting to donate all funds raised to cancer research at The Mater Foundation.
